Mapping the European hydrogen landscape – identifying experts and initiatives to support the SET Plan

To support the coordination of the TWG Hydrogen efforts, SET4H2 has carried out a comprehensive mapping to catalogue EU hydrogen-related platforms, funding programmes, and R&I initiatives including actors focused on hydrogen production, distribution, utilisation, and cross-cutting regulatory and policy areas.

The mapping includes EU-level initiatives and transnational efforts aimed at fostering innovation and scaling up hydrogen technologies. Due to the role of the EU as a global player in the international arena, the report also provides an overview of the main global platforms and initiatives.

Data were collected based on publicly available records and organised into categories:

  • Industry and research Networks (e.g. Hydrogen Europe)
  • Public-private partnerships (e.g. Clean Hydrogen Partnership)
  • European networks and platforms (e.g. European Clean Hydrogen Alliance)
  • Funding instruments (e.g. Innovation Fund)
  • Project-based platforms (e.g. European Hydrogen Academy)
  • International cooperation (e.g. UNIDO Programme on Hydrogen in Industry)

The results are synthesised into visual and analytical representations of the hydrogen ecosystem within the EU (see the images below for examples). Details of each initiative are summarised in a dedicated fiche.

The report also provides an overview of the major international and global programmes on hydrogen categorised by their primary focus: support for development, standardisation and policy alignment, or R&I policies and global/regional scope.
